Addressing the impact of violence and trauma

Violence of any type inevitably results in trauma. When considering the root causes of inequities that exist in our neighborhoods, it is critical that we work to understand the impact of violence and resulting trauma. The epidemic of gun violence has dominated the national conversation, but the violence impacting our communities takes many forms; including sexual violence, domestic abuse, violence against religious minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community.

As someone who has experienced the impacts of gun violence, I understand, on a personal level, the lasting challenges associated with trauma. For many communities, trauma impacts their ability to obtain quality healthcare, education, and a comfortable livelihood. We must be strong advocates for shining a light on the experiences that lead to trauma, and the challenges too many neighbors face. We must also work tirelessly to include intentional legislation that actually removes weapons of war from our streets, supports survivors, and spark a conversation about the impact of trauma on the Washington DC Community. We must fight for everyone's right to thrive, not just survive.

I will work to:

  • Spark a deeper conversation on what steps must be taken to support our most fragile communities, bringing all actors to the table to find a permanent, long-term solution.

  • Ensure all Washington DC and Federal resources are being distributed and distributed in an equitable manner.

  • Stoke the public consciousness about the impact of trauma through targeted messaging and outreach.

  • Advocate for the development of 5D community centers, safer schools, and an increase in community resources, including domestic violence prevention.
