Running in Park

Parks, Recreation, and Connecting the Wider Community

As incredible as Union Market, La Cosecha and other businesses are, it's getting expensive. The DC Government must work to develop free places of relaxation, retreat, and education in the neighborhood. The Union Market / Gallaudet neighborhood has the potential to become an urban oasis for relaxation, recreation, and fun. At the moment, the neighborhood does not have easy access to parks, community centers, pools, libraries, and more government services. We must ensure that we are catering our services to all neighbors in an accessible manner, and catering to a large University audience. 5D01 can be green, enjoyable, and accessible. I commit to working with key partners, including our neighbors in Ivy City and Trinidad, to develop facilities that serve everyone.

I will work to:

  • Support a partnership between large Universities and the DC Government, to develop a series of joint projects to serve both the Universities, and their surrounding communities, including:

    • Theaters

    • Libraries

    • Community Health Clinics

    • Fitness & Rec Centers

  • Advocate for the development of parks in yet-to-be-developed land, and develop a dog parks in shared spaces

  • Advocate for the development of "green roofs" atop the Union Market buildings, and other shared spaces, and the implementation of community gardens in partnership with local small businesses.

  • Increase the number of trees and foliage lining our streets, and advocate for the development of protected bike lanes, using foliage and natural features.

* Many of these policies were developed and influenced through conversations with Sean A. Maiwald, MPP. Thank you for your partnership, Sean.
